Fiber technology is a direct connection to your home: Internet data travels as light through a glass fiber optic cable to a device called an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which converts the signal for your router. A fiber cable (drop) is run from a nearby terminal that could be either a pole or an underground box) to your home. A small box on the outside of your home called a NID is installed and the fiber is coiled in there and connected to a fiber that runs into the home. Fiber optic internet, often referred to as "fiber to the home" (FTTH) or "fiber to the premises" (FTTP), represents the pinnacle of current broadband technology.
