A submarine communications cable is a cable laid on the between land-based stations to carry across stretches of ocean and sea. The community installed over 18 kilometers of fiber optic cables to bring connectivity to Shaghap from the nearby village of Vedy, and then laid another two kilometers within the village to connect several homes and buildings, including the local school. 3 million kilometers (800,000 miles) —enough to circle the Earth 32 times! The world's longest undersea cable, SEA-ME-WE 6, stretches 19,200 km (12,000 miles), connecting Europe, Africa, and Asia. These used good old fashioned copper wires (originally just one or two) in a LOT of shielding, and then later simple repeaters or amplifiers (and the power to drive those). We find the answer in our seas and oceans, which for over a century and a half have housed thousands and thousands of meters of cables in their depths, without which the Internet would not be possible.
